An Analysis of Articles Published in the Journal of Health and Social Science : Historical Reflection

Abstract
The first journal of ¡®the Korean association of health and medical sociology¡¯ was published in 1997 entitled ¡®Health and Social Science(HASS)¡¯. The 20th anniversary of the HASS will come in two years. This study examined the annals of the journals and the characteristics of those articles for a period of last 18 years. It could be an essential prerequisite to provide its completeness for the 20th anniversary commemorative issue. Four variables were chosen for the purpose of this study. Those were historical characteristics, editing configurations, corresponding authors and research methods used in each article. This descriptive study included 36 journals, 281 articles, 36 contents & contribution rules, materials of the editorial board and notices and so on. Data were summarized using descriptive statistics. Three periods of the historical development were verified: 6 years of a formative period, 8 years of a developing period and 4 years of a ongoing expanding period. Some of complementary measures were found in order to improve on the HASS. That is, securing stabilities and expertises of the editor-in-chiefs, reestablishment of identity on the HASS, a design to strengthen systematization of the editing system, deconcentration of the contributors, diversification of the publication type and prevention of the errors in relation to editing and printing. This historical consideration on the HASS made a request for further growth. Securing various and rich in human resources are the key to the achievement. Besides, their active and voluntary participations, and building a supportive environment to encourage the participations are critical tasks for the successful future of HASS.
